Continuing to Stand Up

So this week I made an impromptu appearance in a comedy club - on only a provisional license considering the graduation show is not until 15th. It was a baptism of fire to say the least!

I had intended on going to support a friend but had heard they also allow you to put your name in a hat for a spot so when I arrived early I figured, 'why not?'. As I entered the dark, empty club, I started to have alarm bells. And rightfully so...

I had to sit for 3 1/2 hours watching approx 20 men making jokes about their 'members' whilst I sat nervously waiting and wondering if I should cut my losses and leave. The club was full of men - more men than I have ever seen in my life given that until this point I have been training in musical theatre and constantly surrounded by women. A lot of these men did not look old enough to be out on their own, let alone in a bar, which was slightly disconcerting.

On top of all of this my material is about musicals - yes, musicals. Scared is not the word.

Miracle of miracles they laughed....!!!! Not to spoil my material but even Cliff Richard got a clap.

Stand Up

So in three weeks time I reveal myself to the public.

Not in a rude way, thankfully, but as a stand up comic. I have worked with Logan Murray on the Amused Moose course for a couple of months and after two full notebooks, a class full of very nice people and hitting at least one comedy wall, we are about to graduate from comedy school. Do I feel scared? Yes. But it's exciting all the same.

Now I have to start booking myself into some open spots and start working hard on a tight 5 mins - yes all that effort for just 5 minutes!

Of course I am currently fighting with myself not to write down lots of jokes right here, but then I won't have anything left for my set that hasn't already been heard; although at the moment I don't know if I am going to perform as a character or as myself so it will be as much of a surprise to me as to you! So on Tuesday 15th May at Amused Moose Camden I will attempt to deliver 5 minutes of comedy gold. Or at least nickle.
