The Creative Brain

I have always been 'a creative'. From directing my primary school leavers' show, to writing plays and directing shows at drama college. My brain just won't stop with ideas and projects, this can be great but it also can be a nightmare.

Particularly when I was young, I cared so much about my creative endeavors that I would give everything of myself to it - it is why I know I don't want to produce or direct anymore and that performing is my thing. Whilst I directed the aforementioned primary school show I was so wrapped up in it my mum took me to a sleep clinic to sort out my insomnia! The backstage brain is defiantly a slightly different brain to that of a perfomer.

My aim for this year is to say 'F***k it' more, keep perspective and not get so emotional invested, but sadly that is like telling David Dickinson he should probably take it easy on the San Tropez. I put my all into everything I do but find it hard to prioritise - I see everything on the same level which of course can be over-whelming.

(I realise right now I sound like one of those arses who when asked in a job interview: "Tell us what your weakness are" answers with "My biggest weakness is working too hard". I don't mean to be sickening - I really didn't work hard during any P.E. lessons I attended. And I was there at least 5 or 6 times.)

Right at the moment I have at least 5 different business ideas, alongside obviously perusing my career as an actor and the ideas pop up all the time: I have thoughts in the shower of 'I wonder what is better Squarespace or Wordpress to build my new busness site on?', I drive along and an idea for a new community website that will defiantly make me money, whilst cooking dinner I will think of a great idea for an Edinburgh show. I have too many bloomin' ideas!!

I was chatting to my friend Georgina yesterday and she recommended I work on 1 idea at a time. So simple. Focus on one idea and do it until it is done. This is brilliant because having tonnes of ideas seems to go hand in hand with procrastination! I love this video on feeling over-whelmed:

Spa-ing Partners

Jim and I have just got back from a 'business retreat' at a gorgeous country house and spa. We intended to write, plan and finish our Edinburgh application. Instead we swam, ate gorgeous food and had amazing treatments - IT WAS SO GOOD!

The hotel had a problem with their wi-fi (a reason why I chose this particular spa) but it was incredibly liberating. I don't spend enough time 'relaxing' or even giving myself a day off. When you are self-employed it can mean you work every hour you are awake and I keep ready business blogs saying about how you can be so much more productive if you have a day off a week, as well as limiting your internet time. I always thought this was a nice idea but didn't see how I would practically implement it. Now I have had it thrust upon me I will defiantly do it again.

If you are interested in where we went it was Cisswood House - thoroughly recommend it.
