My Top 5 Procrastinating Tips

Lately I have been buying a flat, writing a teen novel, a cabaret show, coach 35-odd students through LAMDA exams, teach for Stagecoach and similar companies, learn to play the piano, saxophone and auditioning. Very busy as ever but somehow I manage to procrastinate like a pro.

What follows is not my tips for avoiding it - in fact please leave a comment with how to do so below as I am not supplying you with anything so useful. Au contraire mes amis this is my top 5 things I find myself doing at any point of the day - every day.

1. Netflix (and NowTV, iPlayer etc.)

My favourite shows to splurge on are currently 'Jessica Jones' (a comic book kick ass detective), 'iZombie' (mix between Jessica Jones, Buffy and Being Human), 'Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt' (frickin' hilarious Tina Fey written comedy series), 'RuPaul's Drag Race' (I watched all 6 seasons Netflix had in a week. Seriously. Season 1 has now gone and they NEED to get season 7 and 8 on there if anyone from Netflix happen to be reading this!!) and last but not least my all time favourite show 'Once Upon a Time' (fairy tale/fictional/mythical characters are all stuck in our world but it's much more complicated and brilliant than that - I'm even watching it as I type. Loads of familiar faces turn up in it including former Neighbours and Eastenders actors).

I also have a penchant for bad made-for-TV romantic comedies - Channel 5 is good for this, especially with the run up to Christmas, which seems to start around the middle of October.

2. Neighbours

Ok so not a huge procrastination as it's just once a day, twice if I came in half way and need to catch up and yes NEED is the correct word. Thank goodness for catch up; I recently had a week in the west coast of Ireland in a holiday home without a TV or internet so I splurged as soon as I got back.

Neighbours is brilliant because it's sunny, funny and the stories move FAST! Something will be set-up on Monday and often resolved by Wednesday so no ridiculous stretching out of mysteries unless it's a big one such as who made Lassiters explode (yes 90s Neighbours fans, Lassiters is still a thing and it exploded a couple of weeks ago - of course everyone thinks it's Paul Robinson but that's just too easy. And yes Paul Robinson is STILL in it as are Karl, Susan and Toadie. Lauren and Brad are back but with completely different faces and even hair colour in Brad's case. This was a long parenthesis, thanks for sticking with it).

3. YouTube

Youtube is a flipping wormhole for me! Once upon a time I restricted my viewing to TED talks and Oprah but now I am obsessed with watching: any behind the scenes interviews and footage Neighbours put out which happily is a lot, Tom and Gi Fletcher's vlogs - this is only a recent thing for me so there is a lot to catch up on should I wish, and lastly my favourite channel 'Hey Qween' which has very funny, often rude, interviews with all the RuPaul girls as well as other creative types from the LGBT world. The recent addition of celebrity gossip show 'Hot T' is so funny as well as having an incredibly catchy theme tune that you won't get out of your head - my boyfriend hasn't even watched it but can sing it back to me as does at random occasions!

4. Podcasts

I LOVE podcasts. I'm not convinced this is a true procrastination as I mainly listen in the Gym or whilst driving but I do also listen on train journeys when I really could be writing. My favourite podcasts are the old 'Adam and Joe' ones but Adam Buxton is currently doing a brilliant one that has had some fascinating and amusing conversations with people such as Doc Brown, Sara Pascoe and Kathy Burke. I also enjoy the 'Spotlight' ones along with any podcasts with interesting insights into people's creative processes and careers.

5.The Gym and Eating Well

This one sounds mad I know, but just bear with me:

I started the year by joining the gym, I haven't been able to afford as many dance classes as I would normally do but want to keep my fitness level up, plus my boyfriend is OBSESSED with going every day. But this takes time, mainly because I don't like showering there so I have to not only allow time to get there, work out and go home but I also need to wash as I am a sweater - not like a jumper, I just perspire a lot, it's meant to mean I'm healthy; don't look at me like that!.

Making time to do all this is tricky when you work several different part time jobs and you already do all of the above steps so I put the gym into my procrastination from writing bin.

I have also recently been attempting an 'eat clean'. I gave up sugar for Lent (harder than you think, it is in EVERYTHING!) but now I've gone further and taken on the Hedi Hearts 3 month clean eating challenge. Luckily it's British based so the ingredients and products they recommend are all found in normal supermarkets - a problem I've found on previous diets. However it still all adds up although perhaps not as much as eating out or takeaway but this takes us to my next time-keeping problem - I'm cooking ALL the time. Good for me not eating processed food but I also need time to make it and I feel like I spend half the day making food to make me thin. Thin but poor as I have no time to work.

I need to marry rich don't I? As in they have money, not someone called Rich. Although the next wedding I go to is with someone called Rich but he is marrying Laura so I think a lot of people would object to me trying, not least my boyfriend Jim.

When I'm not cooking I'm on the Eat Clean Challenge facebook group (no where near as much as others - I have seen a LOT of pictures of people's food) and checking out recipes. I could now run my own wholefoods cafe which I guess culd be a side career, that doesn't take time does it? Kellis still manages to have a music career and be a chef, which makes sense as I've heard great things about her milkshake.

5 1/2. Blogging when you're meant to be writing!
