Confessions of an Undiscovered Star

Friday 13th

My life style is mad. I am here, there and everywhere performing stand up, singing in care homes, entertaining at parties, coaching drama - all sorts. I pride myself on being pretty good at juggling (ironically I can't juggle) but today was a Friday 13th to remember.

I was performing at a car home today - all done up in my fancy vintage clothing and flicked eyeliner. I have been to this particular home many times previous but when I arrived I didn't see the normal admin lady that deals with me, so one of the care workers pointed me towards the lift. (The admin lady will make an appearance in this story so don't worry admin lovers)

I went up to the top floor and set up my equipment in front of the fireplace. A nurse was there giving out medication and several workers were buzzing about, going about their jobs. No one seemed particularly ready or expecting a singer but smiled at me as they went past.

It was now 11:10am and no one seems ready. I was meant to start at 11am so I looked about waiting to get a nod to start from a familar face but none were to be seen. A nurse asked me if I am doing both their level and the one downstairs? I explain previous I have performed on just the one level and residents come down to me....oh...I'm on the wrong floor and they are waiting downstairs for me! Both floors are IDENTICAL!

(It is weird that the nurse who initially sent me off to the lift hadn't been worried where the elegantly dressed singer had disappeared to - as if I was a musical Nicholas Lyndhurst in 'Goodnight Sweetheart' with a magical portal to yesteryear.)

So off in the lift I go and once again I set up PA, music stand and props. Luckily this time I'm on the correct floor with residents sat around in armchairs awaiting some music which is a promising start. I am just about to start when the admin lady (remember from earlier? Horray!) appears and lets me know that she has just left a message on my answerphone asking me to change the date on my invoice from today to next Wednesday as that is when they were expecting me... And more to the point Trevor the pianist is downstairs ready to play some love songs for Valentines.

She says how 'weird it was that they had double booked me' and that she 'must get the activities organiser on the phone'. I explain that I only live nearby so let the other entertainer perform and I can come back another day. The nurses joke that we could do a duet; septuagenarian Trevor probably has a lovely baritone and plays like a dream but I think I shall let him do his thing.

I didn't have my diary on me so rang home just to check the details I had down: Mum reads out the time and name of the care home I was meant to be at...the one down the road. I'm in the wrong place.

Luckily they don't mind and I go anyway despite the fact I was meant to be singing with my accompanist at 11am. I performed on my own for an hour to 6 lovely residents who sang every word plus one lady who continually told me I was 'terrible'. I love being a professional performer.

Vocal power

Summer term was spent touring with a play about drug education to schools all over London and the Home Counties. With the money I made I have bought a load of equipment to start recording voice-overs from home. This is a very exciting new project for me and I am looking forward to starting my business.

I also have been singing at lovely summer garden parties and local events with guitarist Stephanie Baker and we hope to take this further so watch this space!
